Our networking dinner gathered 20+ mentors and 60+ students. Our mentors spanned from extensive careers in international relations, law, nonprofit work, federal/state/local governments, consulting, finance, etc. This was an incredibly formative experience for students to explore potential career paths and to navigate their time in undergrad to be the most fulfilling and cultivating experience.
In February, we hosted a Fireside Chat with lawyer and social media personality Michael Foote. Foote does important work in immigration and civil rights law, all while maintaining a funny and authentic presence online. Our members had the opportunity to converse with Foote about his experiences in law school, in the courtroom, and on social media.
As part of our professional development series, we ensure that our fellows are equipped with resources for internships and on/off campus jobs. Every semester we offer the opportunity for fellows and any members of POLIS to get free professional headshots taken.
In January, we organized a discussion featuring brothers who have conducted research across a variety of disciplines. This roundtable offered students multiple perspectives on what research looks like, how to get involved, and the inspiring discoveries and questions that emerge through the research process.
Between classes, brothers were pied in support of POLIS philanthropy efforts. Pie-a Pi Lambda fosters community and camaraderie among brothers while supporting one of POLIS' missions: supporting and serving the surrounding community.
POLIS hosted a conversation featuring immigration advocate Bethany Thorne, history professor Nara Milanich, immigration attorney Danney Salvatierra, and journalist Trisha Mukherjee. Together, they offered compelling insights into immigration, human rights, and advocacy in today's world.
POLIS is home to a diverse collection of communities, including our Hispanic brotherhood. We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about influential Hispanic figures and important political events The evening finished with salsa lessons and fabulous dancing from our members!
Our chapter heard from individuals of varying backgrounds (former senior advisors, staffers, and others involved in campaigns or governmental offices) on their experiences as well as advice in exploring interests in undergraduate studies. This event was followed by a networking session where members could speak to speakers.
During black history month, POLIS highlighted black brothers and the policy issues impacting the black community. Members had the opportunity to learn more about the unique interests within our brotherhood while celebrating black excellence in politics and policy.
Throughout the recruitment process as well as the semester, Polis E-Board and the VP Professional Development host several workshops on best tips and tricks to create a well-crafted resume for internships, research, grad school, jobs, and more! Making sure our members prosper in and outside of Columbia is an integral part of our mission statement.
