PAST EVENTS
We kicked off our first annual networking dinner series, gathering over 20+ mentors and 60+ students. Our mentors spanned from extensive careers in international relations, law, nonprofit work, federal/state/local governments, consulting, finance, etc. This was an incredibly formative experience for students to explore potential career paths and to navigate their time in undergrad to be the most fulfilling and cultivating experience.
In April, we held an intimate conversation with faculty to discuss how the campus climate at Barnard/Columbia has changed in the past year as well as the political/social/economic ramifications of Columbia's role in federal policy.
As part of our professional development series, we ensure that our fellows are equipped with resources for internships and on/off campus jobs. Every semester we offer the opportunity for fellows and any members of POLIS to get free professional headshots taken.
In March, we held a professional development Grad School Panel featuring students currently pursuing 4+1 degrees from SIPA, at Columbia Law School, and PhD students in various different departments! This was a informative opportunity for students to learn about the application processes, career paths, and student experiences.
We launched our Fireside Chat Career Panels with Judge Small, a former Federal Bankruptcy Judge that has had an extensive career in law under several administrations like Clinton and Trump. He has wrote several influential bills targeted towards small business relief from the COVID-19 pandemic. He spoke about his time in law school, being a federal lawyer and then judge, as well as advice in careers.
In collaboration with Columbia Undergraduate Law Review, POLIS organized a panel for members to explore their pre-law interests. Speakers ranged from corporate lawyers to law school professors to law school students. For our many members who are pursuing a pre-law track, this was a great opportunity to explore their futures.
Members joined us as we went through all the emotions of the 2024 Presidential debate. This was a great opportunity to debrief our thoughts on a range of policy issues as well as catch up with our fellow brothers in a lighthearted community-based setting.
Our chapter heard from individuals of varying backgrounds (former senior advisors, staffers, and others involved in campaigns or governmental offices) on their experiences as well as advice in exploring interests in undergraduate studies. This event was followed by a networking session where members could speak to speakers.
Throughout the recruitment process as well as the semester, Polis E-Board and the VP Professional Development host several workshops on best tips and tricks to create a well-crafted resume for internships, research, grad school, jobs, and more! Making sure our members prosper in and outside of Columbia is an integral part of our mission statement.
