OUR MISSION
As Columbia students, we carry a responsibility to use our education, resources, and privilege in service of those who do not share the same access or protection. Across the country, we are witnessing unconstitutional deportations, and unlawful treatment of both citizens and immigrants. Here in New York City, a proudly designated sanctuary city, we must be prepared for the possibility of increased ICE and DHS presence on and around our campus, as well as within the broader community we call home.
Like sanctuary cities across the nation that are resisting this federal push, we too must take a stand. This POLIS community is made up of immigrants, children of immigrants, and individuals whose lives, families, and histories are deeply shaped by migration. This reality makes the current moment personal. In response, POLIS is committing our philanthropic endeavors, time, and resources to protecting our neighbors, classmates, peers, and loved ones from illicit and unjust treatment.
In collaboration with immigration attorneys, government officials, and leading immigration scholars, we are working to chart a path forward: one in which, regardless of citizenship status, every person’s right to dignity, due process, and safety is upheld without question.
HELP PROTECT IMMIGRANT'S RIGHTS
Why Is It Important?
Food insecurity is the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one's basic needs. In New York City, 1.3 million people face this issue while ¼ children do not knowing where their next meal is coming from. A well-balanced diet is critical for academic success, yet many low-income families and marginalized communities disproportionately face food insecurity, leading to disparities in health and education. This issue becomes even more severe during the summer months when children lose access to school-provided free meals.
